Shes pretty damn cool, sometimes. For anyone that knows her personally, shes quite moody and really only wants to deal with attention from people on her own terms. Ive accepted this about her, and love her anyhow.
Today though, I just had a revelation about her and her personality that Im not too sure that I like.
I was taking her out today for a walk and to gone head and do her business and whatnot. Couple houses down the block its this older white couple that have a dog very similar to mine, hes all white and his name is Toto.
Now Toto LOOOOOOVES Labelle. You can just tell. Whenever she walks by his house he’s barking all crazy to get her attention. She just ignores it and keep it moving. But TODAY tho, she just kind of gave him the real.
Im walking her, and the old man is walking with Toto. Toto sees Labelle and runs down the block to see her. Walks up to her and just starts wagging his tail, and begins to try and sniff her like most dogs do. What does she do?
She. Just. Stands. There.
And gives him the most “nigga if you dont get ALL OF THE FUCK OUT OF MY FACE" look that Ive ever seen. Her face is very expressive so you KNOW what she was thinking. So he stands there, wagging his tail trying to get her to play with him, and shes flat out avoiding eye contact and turning her head away from him.
I then greeted the owner, we talked about the weather, and we walked off.
It hit me then, that Labelle embodies each and every single female that I hate.
The one that is all stuck up, out and about looking good, just being there with the stank face on looking FORWARD to turning all men down that just want to get to know her.
So after she pooped, she still had an attitude, but she wanted to play fetch.
Guess what, I aint feel like it.
…so now shes laying in the middle of the floor pouting, all alone.
Hopefully she just caught the lesson i just gave out.
I recently saw this new series "The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl" and I wanted to tell you about it. Its like "The Office" or "Parks and Recreation", only with a black girl lead. Next time you're on youtube, search "Awkward Black Girl" - its hilarious!
I never responded in a timely fashion when u sent this, but because of you I DID watch the entire series. Crazy hiarious. Glad Issa is making moves, hope to see it on tv one day.
Happy birthday to one of the most influential people in my life. No I didnt know the man personally, but there was a connection there. Came VERY close to meeting him. He knew nothing about it in any way, but I did. I still remember the day you passed on. I was at work actually TALKING about picking up “Donuts” once I got my grip from the gig. I was doing promotions for this local store for black history month, and I got a text from my boy Focus saying you passed.
I was beyond hurt. But I wasnt surprised.
Cant say how I knew, but I knew you were sick well before alot of the world did. I was just praying and hoping that it wasnt true. Then pictures popped up of you doing your last show overseas and it became all too real for me.
My hero was dying.
But this isnt about you leaving, its about what you did while you were here. You gave us endless classics, crazy hilarious records, and hell even a music genre. Most folks cant even get their own hit. You did it all out here. It sucks that it took you leaving for folks to recognize your genius, but honestly…better late than never. Hopefully you feel all the love that folks show you now up there.
I’ll be bumping nothing but your work all day in your honor b.
With the recent death of Soul Train creator and entertainment pioneer, Don Cornelius, I’ve seen a lot of conversations around the “taboo” of suicide. When I first heard that Don died of a self-inflicted gunshot to the head, I made sure to steer clear of the conversation. More often that not, in…
I agree 100%. Until you know what its like to not want to live, don’t dare speak ill on this topic. You never know what someone is going through.
