Happy Birthday Dilla…
Happy birthday to one of the most influential people in my life. No I didnt know the man personally, but there was a connection there. Came VERY close to meeting him. He knew nothing about it in any way, but I did. I still remember the day you passed on. I was at work actually TALKING about picking up “Donuts” once I got my grip from the gig. I was doing promotions for this local store for black history month, and I got a text from my boy Focus saying you passed.
I was beyond hurt. But I wasnt surprised.
Cant say how I knew, but I knew you were sick well before alot of the world did. I was just praying and hoping that it wasnt true. Then pictures popped up of you doing your last show overseas and it became all too real for me.
My hero was dying.
But this isnt about you leaving, its about what you did while you were here. You gave us endless classics, crazy hilarious records, and hell even a music genre. Most folks cant even get their own hit. You did it all out here. It sucks that it took you leaving for folks to recognize your genius, but honestly…better late than never. Hopefully you feel all the love that folks show you now up there.
I’ll be bumping nothing but your work all day in your honor b.
